April is the month dedicated to raising awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that mainly impacts communication, behaviour and social interaction.
More than talking about diagnosis, Blue April is an invitation to quality information, empathy and real inclusion.
What is ASD?
ASD is not a single disease it is a spectrum, which means that each person presents different characteristics and levels of support.
The signs usually appear during childhood and can include:
-
Difficulty with verbal and non-verbal communication
-
Reduced or atypical social interaction
-
Repetitive behaviours
-
Restricted interests
-
Sensory sensitivity (sounds, light, touch)
Why is awareness so important?
Because there is still misinformation and delayed diagnosis.
Early recognition allows:
-
Appropriate intervention
-
Development of skills
-
Better quality of life for the child and family
Diagnosis and monitoring
Diagnosis is clinical, made by trained professionals, based on observation of the child's behaviour and development.
Monitoring can involve a multidisciplinary team:
-
Paediatrician
-
Neuropaediatrician
-
Psychologist
-
Speech and language therapist
-
Occupational therapist
Inclusion is not an option it is a necessity
Talking about autism is also talking about:
-
Respect for differences
-
Access to inclusive education
-
Reduction of prejudice
-
Support for families
Each person with ASD has their own way of seeing and interacting with the world and this needs to be understood, not corrected.
